Cheese on Toast's by Ceili Murphy Here are a few favourite trailers for 'coming soon' films. You may notice a couple from the film fest and as much as I shun broken records, it seemed important to include them for those of us that missed (the one or two screenings) them during the festival. August 6 th looks to be cine-fun as there's a wallop of new films released. I hope you enjoy these bite sized teasers and you can see them all at the movies over the next week... |

Flashbacks of a Fool |

Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, is the latest Harry Potter fantasy - adventure film , based on the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling . It is the sixth film in the Harry Potter film series , directed by David Yates , the director of the fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . The book sold three million copies in the first 16 hours after its release, a record at the time. Now I'm not the biggest Harry Potter fan in fact shamefully I have never picked up a Harry book. So for this review I asked for help from a true aficionado , my little cousin Callum, who at almost 7years old has read and re-read all the Harry Potter books. I'm told with thorough analysis and appreciation. The film is set during Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts and explores Lord Voldemort's past. Harry Potter, together with Dumbledore, must face treacherous tasks to defeat his evil nemesis. Harry has to prepare for the final battle amidst emerging romantic relationships and the emotional confusions and conflict resolutions characteristic of mid-adolescence. Apparently the film is very different to the book, to the outrage of Callum, they had changed the entire ending and missed out some very important parts. After some discussion we came up with two different ratings. For bookworms the film only gets a Callum 2.5 stars out of 5. But non-readers myself included Callum gave a mighty 4 stars out of 5, overall it's highly enjoyable and entertaining, they're all growing up, hooking up, and experimenting with all different kinds of potions. So be prepared for it to be different to the book and hopefully you wont be disappointed and enjoy it for the teen awkwardness and other spectacles. Be sure to remember your wand, cape and/or cousin. Daniel Craig plays a fading Hollywood star looking back at his youth as he returns home from his best friend's funeral. It looks like a shocker best seen as a trailer. Undeniably there's novelty in seeing Bond playing a washed up prima donna I'm not convinced it's a novelty that would last the duration of the film. Got time to kill? If not take a look at the trailer for a quiet giggle. |

Coraline - Be careful what you wish for. A festival baby but...Showing from 6th Aug 2009 |
|||
Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, and directed by animation freak Henry Selick (Dir of The Nightmare Before Christmas). A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home (aka Alice in Wonderland) and discovers an alternate version of her life which at first is much superior, but the adventure turns dangerous. Coraline must get back home to save her real family. The Goth-nouveau fairytale obviously strongly influenced by the work of Jan Svankmajer and The Brothers Quay. But visually astonishing and unlike Nightmare before Christmas it isn't a musical - yay! |
Coco avant Chanel Showing from 6th Aug 2009 in Auckland and Wellington and Christchurch and Dunedin on 20 th August.
Biography with the brilliant Audrey Tautou as the headstrong, self-sufficient designer Coco Chanel. Waahoo if you like me didn't get a ticket before they sold out in the festival...it's ok because it's one of the first of many to make its comeback tour! Hopefully it'll live up to the sold-out status, with Audrey Tautou (aka Amelie) and vintage Chanel it's bound to be more than a little visually apealling. |

KIWI FILM AT LARGE! Separation City Showing from 6th Aug 2009
|
Writer and political cartoonist Tom Scott, best known in New Zealand for his dry wit and political savvy, penned the first draft of the draft of "Separation City" over twenty years ago. Now the New Zealand born and raised much acclaimed Director, Paul Middleditch (currently number two commercial director in the world) returned to his "home town" of Wellington to helm his third feature film. "Separation City" was shot in Wellington, New Zealand and Berlin, Germany. Stars an impressive international cast that includes Australian actor Joel Edgerton ("Kinky Boots", "The Secret Life of Us"); British actor Rhona Mitra ("Boston Legal", "Underworld - The Rise of the Lycans"), German actor Thomas Kretschmann ("King Kong", "The Pianist"), stunning Kiwi actress Danielle Cormack ("A Song of Good", "Rude Awakenings"); and fellow Australian Les Hill ("Underbelly", "Thank God He Met Lizzie"). Kiwi comedy-drama with Joel Edgerton and Danielle Cormack, written by Tom Scott. Described as a painful tale about marriage, bad sex and requited love...almost enough to put me off, but it actually looks pretty impressive and stylistically atypical for a "kiwi" NZ film commission funded film. |
